GTI supports teacher interns affected by the Gauteng storms

Over the past week there have been heavy storms in Gauteng which destroyed many homes. Two of our teacher interns were affected as their homes were destroyed or roofs taken away. Our regional schools coordinator (RSC) for Gauteng, Ms. Solange Kabeya, rushed to their homes as soon as she heard that the interns were in need of support.

She lives in Alexandra – River Park. The bricks, ceiling and roof of her rented home flew off. Her belongings were waterlogged and destroyed. On the other hand, Magdeline is placed at placed at Iphutheng Primary school, living in Alexandra. The roof of her rented home was also blown away by the wind during the same storm.

This sad and unfortunate experience of our interns showed the value that being a part of GTI’s Future Leaders Programme adds to the lives of our aspiring teachers. The programme provides wrap-around support to the young aspiring teachers so that they don’t fall behind in their university studies due to any crises that can arise from time to time. In this case, GTI provided and/or facilitated emergency support to the teacher interns in the form of cash, temporary shelter, and pyscho-social support to enable them to cope with the challenges associated with not having a secure home due to a natural disaster.

GTI provides a holistic initial teacher education and development programme. We invite you to join us in supporting young people like Mologadi and Magdeline from historically and economically disadvantaged townships and rural areas to train and become empathetic, reflective, and socially responsible teachers for our public schools. No crisis will stop us from accomplishing our mission.

Any donation will be welcome however, if you are able to, a once-off donation of R3000 and/or monthly donation of R150 will guarantee a monthly stipend and/or an internet data bundle for one Future Leader respectively. Please join the campaign by sending your donation and forwarding this article to your own network of friends.
