THE GLOBAL
TEACHERS INSTITUTE

Our mission is to develop reflective, empathetic, socially responsible master teachers for high-need African schools through school-based initial teacher education programmes, projects and interventions for replication and scale.

THE PROBLEM

24,500 schools, 450,000 teachers (ex ELC) Influencing and educating 13,000,000 students.

95% of those schools are public and township — the most desperately in need of quality teaching intervention.

The majority of learners do not have access to the right quality of education.

“Our country is failing its teachers and in so doing is failing its students.”

Education in South Africa is complex, with ongoing challenges and opportunities deeply rooted in a history of inequality.

This lack of access to quality education extends into the individual success of each student, and ultimately perpetuates cycles of poverty, limited potential and social mobility.

If we continue on the current trajectory, the consequences will be far-reaching and deeply detrimental. South Africa risks not only its economic future but also the wellbeing of its communities, its workforce, and its overall progress as a nation.

Our Solution

We believe access to the right education for every learner is the most important foundation for individual and collective progress. That makes establishing the standard of quality educators essential, as they are the core pillars of our society and economy.

Because educators are not just teachers – they are mentors, leaders, and architects of future generations, across every industry and every profession.

Our impact ecosystem covers the areas where we are creating tangible and meaningful change – in and out of the classroom. This includes our flagship school-based pre-service Future Leaders Programme, international exchange, collaborative partnerships, research, technology and advocacy. While the task is big, our commitment is bigger. But we realise our impact can only be achieved through successful partnerships.

Our Impact Ecosystem

Our impact ecosystem covers the areas where we are creating tangible and meaningful change - in and out of the classroom. For us it starts with the crisis occurring in the 95% of public, township and rural South African schools. While the task is big, our commitment is bigger. But we realise our impact can only be achieved through successful partnerships.

Our Funders

The Global Teachers Institute offers an excellent opportunity for companies and charitable foundations to make a difference in South Africa by investing in one of the most important pillars of our education system: our teachers.

"We must do our best to ensure that the children of Africa have a solid foundation upon which to build their future."
