GTI Future Leaders Imbizo 2020

Each year GTI is committed to hosting a multi-day convergence of students, teachers and education leaders from throughout South Africa and around the world. In the light of the COVID -19 pandemic, we were, unfortunately, unable to host the annual GTI Axis Summit for 2020, which has been the highlight of the year for our pre-service and in-service teachers for the past 5 years.

We decided to focus our efforts into to hosting a GTI Future Leaders Imbizo instead, with the Future Leaders Imbizo our aim was to provide opportunities for our student teachers, across all regions to collaborate and build relationships. The theme for the online Imbizo was Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”, which was also the theme for World Teachers’ day. Future Leaders were provided with the opportunity to collaborate across the regions before the event, they submit a creative piece that spoke to the theme.

Asanda Sigigaba was our guest speaker. Asanda is a GTI Future Leader graduate, who is now the Head of the LEAP Science and Maths School in Alexandra Township. On 11 September 2020 Asanda was amongst the winners of the Mail & Guardian Young 200 South Africans and she delivered the keynote address to our aspiring, Future Leaders.

The Imbizo also celebrate and honoured the GTI graduates who completed and graduated in 2019, with this we hoped to encourage and motivate the final year students who will be completing the programme in 2020. The online Future Leaders Imbizo was held on the 9th October 2020 from 10h00 to 14h00 in the various regions and they connect via zoom.
