The Global Teachers Institute (GTI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop reflective, empathetic, socially responsible master teachers for high-need African schools through school-based initial teacher education programmes, projects, and replication interventions and scale.
Future Leaders’ core programme is an innovative model for training new teachers from under-resourced townships and rural areas through paid internships in schools, allowing students to earn money and get valuable work experience while doing their B.Ed. Degree via distance learning through UNISA. The programme has over 80 interns at 20 schools throughout South Africa.
Like many organisations, COVID-19 and the current lockdown have affected the way we work and highlighted the deep inequities in our society: 87% of our interns have felt a negative financial impact as their households are no longer earning an income.
Also, with schools currently not operating due to the lockdown, many of our interns only have their phones to access the internet, making submitting assignments to UNISA difficult. GTI is also currently unable to run the weekly academic and professional development support sessions we run at schools.
To change this, we have started the Fund the Future Crowdfunding Campaign, where we hope to raise R240 000 to:
Provide a food security grant to interns in households who have lost income
Provide a laptop or tablet to each intern with data to enable them to submit UNISA assignments on time
Reach out to our interns with weekly, online academic support and professional development sessions
